A flight tax introduced nearly three years ago to discourage short-haul flights generated €42.3 million last year, according to the Ministry of Finance.
Currently, there is a €2 tax on flights within the European Union over 500 km and a €4 tax on flights outside the EU over 500 km. These raised €22.1 million and €16.3 million in 2024, respectively.
Short-haul flights up to 500 km are taxed €10 and contributed €3.9 million to the treasury last year.
The new Federal Government intends to "simplify" these taxes. Taxes for EU flights over 500 km and flights over 500 km outside the EU are set to rise to €5. However, the tax on short-haul flights up to 500 km will remain the same.
In 2023, the so-called 'boarding tax' generated €40.4 million, meeting the €40 million target. The difference is largely due to higher revenue from flights over 500 km within Europe, which increased from €20.6 million to €22.1 million.
