Unions blocked the entrance to the Brussels sorting centre of Belgium's postal company Bpost on Tuesday night. This closure follows similar actions at the Liège (Awans) and Charleroi (Fleurus) centres, which have hampered post delivery.

Three Bpost distribution centres in Belgium are now closed due to union actions. As a result, only two sorting centres in Flanders (Ghent and Antwerp) continue to operate normally.

Postal workers have been protesting for over a week against a work reorganisation proposed by management. The proposal alters the process for reassigning delivery routes and is deemed "too far and too fast" by the CSC Transcom union.

Blockades were gradually set up at the two Walloon sorting centres, and now also in the Belgian capital.

Failed discussions

Bpost maintains that no jobs will be lost during this reorganisation. A meeting between unions and management on Tuesday failed to resolve the postal disruptions. Bpost "hopes to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible," according to a spokesperson.

On Tuesday, about 70% of routes in Wallonia were covered. However, postal workers had few letters and parcels to deliver due to the blockades at the sorting centres.

Bpost workers are also expected to take part in the national strike on Thursday 13 February, causing further chaos.
