The maritime police have discovered 55 kilograms of cocaine in the boot of a car at the Port of Ghent, the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Wednesday.

Authorities spotted the suspicious vehicle at the Port of Ghent on Monday evening. The police found a suitcase with 55 blocks of cocaine weighing 55 kilograms. The 33-year-old driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

"The driver, a 33-year-old Romanian national, was arrested and interrogated extensively. He then appeared before an investigating judge on suspicion of organised drug trafficking, membership of a criminal organisation, and illegal entry into a port area. The judge has decided to keep the man in custody," the Prosecutor stated.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Judicial Police of East Flanders.
