French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Tuesday morning that a "lasting" peace in Ukraine must be accompanied by "strong and credible security guarantees,"
He made the statements after phone calls with US Presidents Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy.
"We seek a solid and lasting peace in Ukraine. For this to happen, Russia must stop its aggression and it must be accompanied by strong and credible security guarantees for Ukrainians," Macron wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after a meeting of European leaders in Paris.
"Otherwise, the risk is that this ceasefire will end up like the Minsk agreements," he added.
He referred to the 2014 and 2015 pacts for a ceasefire that did not end the fighting between the Ukrainian army and Moscow-backed separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
The call with Zelenskyy took place after Macron organised an emergency meeting in Paris with European leaders to discuss the radical shift in US policy on Ukraine initiated by President Donald Trump.
European leaders fear that the Republican president might negotiate a peace deal with Russia in talks that would exclude Kyiv, and even the European Union.
Zelenskyy, for his part, stated on X that his French counterpart had informed him of the discussions with European leaders and that they shared a "common vision" on how to achieve peace.
"We share a common vision: security guarantees must be solid and reliable," he wrote.
"Any other decision without these guarantees, such as a fragile ceasefire, would only be another deception by Russia and a prelude to another Russian war against Ukraine or other European nations."
