Police conducted a major drug operation in the Brussels municipalities of Molenbeek and Anderlecht on Tuesday morning. The police action was reportedly targeting an Albanian criminal organisation that produces and sells cannabis.

Some 200 officers were deployed to carry out searches at various locations in Brussels and Wallonia on Tuesday morning, RTBF reports. The action was preceded by months of investigation. There would be no connection to the recent shootings in Brussels, particularly as the operation concerns the selling of soft drugs and not cocaine.

Police managed to map a criminal network, leading investigators to several places in the Brussels-Capital Region, but also to the Hainaut province.

Last week, Brussels police managed to bust an Albanian drug gang in a series of searches across Belgium.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the organisation used a network of premises in residential areas to house cannabis plantations; 11 plantations totalling 7,980 plants were discovered, 23 kg of cannabis was seized and 14 suspects were arrested at the end of January.
