The Belgian Embassy in Congo has warned its citizens of the deteriorating security situation in the provinces of Tanganyika, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Haut-Katanga, all located in the eastern part of the country.

The Embassy is advising people in these areas to “assess the necessity of their presence” and points out that leaving is still relatively easy, with commercial flights to Kalemie, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi remaining operational for now.

However, the embassy warns that how the situation will develop remains uncertain.

The security situation in eastern Congo has rapidly worsened in recent months due to the advance of the M23 rebels, a group reportedly supported by Rwanda.

M23 has managed to capture Goma, capital of North Kivu, and Bukavu, capital of the neighbouring province of South Kivu.
