Belgian industrial group John Cockerill is eyeing recently closed Audi Brussels to establish a production unit for military vehicles, confirmed CEO François Michel according to reports from L’Echo and De Tijd.

This initiative aligns with Defence Minister Theo Francken’s plans to attract defence companies to the Vorst site.

“Our teams began their research on Friday. The process is moving swiftly. We will visit the site next week with other partners and stakeholders,” said Michel.

After acquiring French light-armoured vehicle manufacturer Arquus in 2004, John Cockerill intended to set up a military vehicle production line in Belgium. With explicit interest from the Belgian government, the Liège-based company is eager to seize this opportunity.

The technology federation Agoria confirmed that not only John Cockerill, but nearly all players in the defence industry, are showing interest.

Francken has also reached out to Rheinmetall. However, the German military vehicle manufacturer is not planning to establish production units in Belgium without significant orders from the country.
