Pedestrian hit at Leuven station: Victim not in life-threatening condition

An 80-year-old man was hit by a bus near Leuven station on Friday afternoon is not in a life-threatening condition, according to Leuven police.

The man sustained severe leg injuries and was taken to UZ Gasthuisberg hospital.

Police interviewed several witnesses and seized CCTV footage for the investigation.

Police spokesperson Marc Vranckx said the accident happened around 16:30. The victim was walking on the green pedestrian area near bus platform 9 when a bus from the city centre approached. The pedestrian was struck by the bus and trapped under its front wheel, resulting in serious leg injuries.

The victim’s wife was walking behind him at the time of the collision. Two passers-by, both nurses at UZ Gasthuisberg, provided first aid at the scene.

Ambulance personnel and a doctor from an emergency response team treated the man at the scene before he was taken to UZ Gasthuisberg, escorted by police, where he underwent surgery.

Several witnesses, including passengers on the bus, gave statements. Footage from CCTV cameras was also seized. The collision occurred in sunny conditions.

The 59-year-old bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs but was deeply affected by the incident and has not yet been interviewed.
