Nearly half of the teenagers and adults participating in a large-scale blood study in the Zwijndrecht region have PFAS levels exceeding European EFSA guidelines, according to the Department of Health.
The findings, announced at a press conference on Tuesday, show high PFAS levels in 48% of the participants from the East Flanders region.
PFAS, particularly PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid), are known contaminants often linked to industrial activities.
Despite the high numbers, a downward trend in PFOS levels has been observed since a smaller study conducted in 2021.
Higher PFOS levels were more common among those living closer to the 3M factory.
In February, 39 agricultural and horticultural businesses in the Zwijndrecht region have applied for compensation from the chemical company 3M.
