An armed man was detained in the centre of the Walloon city of Ciney (Namur province) on Thursday evening following a large-scale manhunt. Police suspended train services and blocked local traffic during the search.

On the evening of 20 March, a major police operation was launched after a man dressed in military uniform was seen near Ciney train station carrying what appeared to be a "weapon of war". The suspect reportedly confronted two police officers, who were forced to take cover when faced with the large-calibre weapon.

"Police were informed by several citizens that a man wearing a hood and dressed in military clothing was walking the streets with what looked like a weapon of war, but did not threaten anyone," Ciney Mayor Frédéric Deville said during a press conference on Friday morning.

The 36-year-old man fled into a wooded area behind the station, prompting a major security response including Federal Police, armed units, and a helicopter. Trains were halted and the area cordoned off as officers searched for the suspect.

The suspect was apprehended at around midnight and arrested. Police recovered a large weapon at the scene, which is being analysed to determine whether it was genuine or a replica.

The man, who is known to police, reportedly suffers from psychological issues. No injuries were reported.

Deville praised the swift and coordinated police response and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Train services resumed on Friday morning and the investigation is ongoing.
