Since Friday, visitors can explore various walking routes in Limburg on the revamped website Wandelen in Limburg.
The new website features an advanced search function allowing users to select walking loops based on criteria such as name, municipality, region, distance, theme, and landscape type. Users can also access online networks of walking nodes to create their own routes.
Limburg, known as a cycling paradise, is also popular among both tourists and locals as a haven for walkers, with opportunities to discover purple seas of heather, rolling hills filled with fruit trees, endless forests, picturesque villages, mysterious marshes, and hidden stream valleys. Last year, the site was viewed more than 2 million times, with 82 per cent of the 423,860 active users from Belgium.
To further meet user needs, the website now includes a new search function for selecting walking loops by various criteria, which can be followed using familiar coloured symbols. Users can also access networks of walking nodes online to create their own routes, and have the option to download GPS data or follow the routes on their smartphones.
“By updating the website with even more features, we aim to encourage more walkers to enjoy Limburg’s nature at their own pace,” said Tourism Minister Melissa Depraetere (Vooruit) during the launch. “There are walks for all ages, experienced hikers, and families looking for a day out in beautiful Limburg. A real recommendation. With the website soon to be available in four languages, we are reaching a broader audience, which will boost Limburg tourism.”
Alongside the website launch, the walking box has also been redesigned. It now includes eight regional maps and three walking folders, offering more than 2,000 kilometres of walking pleasure. The box is available for purchase through the website’s webshop.
Wandelen in Limburg is an initiative by the three Regional Landscapes of Limburg and Visit Limburg vzw. The new website was funded with support from Toerisme Vlaanderen.
