Medieval estate remnants have been uncovered in Ypres, West Flanders, during the construction of a future supermarket, according to a revelation made on Saturday.
The excavations began following the demolition of a building on the Vandenpeereboom Square, which will make way for the supermarket by the end of the year.
Historical sources indicated that a burial site might be located there. This residence of the Counts of Flanders was reportedly the starting point of the city of Ypres.
Archaeologists have uncovered remnants of an estate. They discovered a retaining wall and a moat approximately 15 metres wide.
They hope to uncover an old well or a possible cellar of the Count of Flanders’ residence in the coming weeks.
Coins, buckle fragments, toys, and badges have also been found.
