A female warden at Walloon Andenne prison was assaulted on Saturday evening by an inmate. Two colleagues who came to her aid were also attacked. All three officers were hospitalised following the incident, confirmed Kathleen Van de Vijver, spokesperson for the prison administration, on Sunday.
The incident occurred during a routine cell inspection. The inmate responsible for the assault has been placed in a punishment cell.
A general assembly was held on Sunday morning, during which workers voted to implement the night shift throughout the day. Visits, however, will continue as scheduled.
Kathleen Van de Vijver noted that the assaults reflect broader issues within the prison system. “About ten staff members at Andenne prison, who have been victims of assaults, are currently unable to work,” she stated.
She emphasised the need for urgent measures and fundamental discussions to improve prison conditions. “Increasing capacity alone will not solve these problems,” Van de Vijver explained. “We ensure the safety of society, but it is essential that prisons do not become hazardous for both staff and inmates.”
The spokesperson also highlighted a “shortage of personnel and finances” as critical challenges hindering the proper functioning of prisons.
