A woman died overnight in a house fire in Wellin, in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, according to the Dinaphi emergency zone on Monday morning.

The fire broke out overnight from Sunday to Monday in a house in Halma, in the Wellin municipality. Despite the intervention of multiple fire stations from the Dinaphi and Luxembourg emergency zones, a woman lost her life in the fire.

A forensic doctor and a fire expert are expected on site, with all scenarios, including arson, having not been ruled out, stated the Luxembourg Public Prosecutor on Monday morning.

Three other people were injured, including the victim’s daughter, who was transported to the hospital in shock, according to Wellin mayor Benoit Closson.

An elderly couple from a neighbouring house also had to be taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, the mayor added. The man is wheelchair-bound, and without the heroic intervention of a nearby resident, the couple might not have survived.

The fire affected a block of several adjoining houses. Three homes were completely destroyed, and two others were also damaged, the mayor detailed. Initial findings suggest the flames spread to the neighbouring houses via the roof structure.
