The body of an Eritrean woman in her thirties was found on Monday on a beach in Marck, near Calais in northern France.
The Pas-de-Calais prefecture (administrative body of the region) confirmed the discovery of the victim on Monday.
The woman was wearing a life jacket, which suggests she may have recently attempted or was planning to attempt to cross the English Channel via boat.
This is the ninth migrant death reported on the northern French coast since the beginning of the year, according to the prefecture.
France's 'Office for Combating Illegal Migrant Trafficking' (OLTIM) reports that 78 migrants have died in 2024 while trying to reach England on small boats, marking a record since this phenomenon began in the region in 2018.
