A case of tuberculosis has been detected among PSV Eindhoven’s squad, the Dutch football club announced on Monday.
"One of PSV’s players has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis. Although the risk of further infections is low, the situation is being closely monitored in line with standard health service protocols," the club’s statement read.
PSV Eindhoven added that investigations into the sources and contacts have been initiated, and those involved have been informed.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, typically affecting the lungs. In its active form, the bacteria can spread through the air.
"The risk of infection for those in close contact with the patient is limited. In the open air, there is no risk of infection," explained pulmonologist Pascal Wielders, who works for the health service in the Eindhoven area, as quoted by the club.
"PSV supports the player in their recovery and requests that the players’ privacy be respected," the club added, noting that they are legally unable to disclose the player’s identity.
