A 26-year-old woman from the Brussels municipality of Uccle has been taken into custody for the murder of her baby, the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s office confirmed on Tuesday.
On 21 March 2025, police were called to a social centre in Uccle regarding the death of a five-month-old baby, explained Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Amaury Verhoustraeten. The office confirmed reports by La Capitale and Het Nieuwsblad.
Preliminary findings indicated the baby had drowned while the mother, a resident of the centre, was bathing the child. The mother was arrested and questioned by the police before being presented to the investigating judge.
The judge suspected the mother of murder and placed her under a detention order.
The investigating judge also ordered an autopsy of the baby and a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect, the prosecutor’s office added.
