The local police of the Rivierenland area have arrested a 19-year-old man from Boom for bank card fraud.

The victim, a 66-year-old woman from Bornem, was defrauded of over €45,000. The perpetrator called the woman, pretending to be a Cardstop employee.

She was told that suspicious transactions were occurring with her bank card and was instructed to make transactions with her card reader. She was then asked to place valuable items and her bank cards in a bag for collection by the fraudster.

The police were alerted and started an investigation. It quickly emerged that cash had been withdrawn and transferred using the woman’s bank cards. Purchases had also been made at a jeweller and a luxury brand store, totalling over €45,000.

The police traced an order made by the suspect to a Bpost office in Boom. There, the suspect, a 19-year-old man already known for similar offences, was apprehended.

During a house search, an expensive branded watch was also seized. The suspect has been detained by an investigating judge.
