The Buildings Agency is seeking a contractor to refurbish the Lion’s Mound in the municipality of Braine-l’Alleud, Walloon Brabant, ahead of its 200th anniversary in 2026.
The agency has issued a public tender for a series of "maintenance and security works." These include cleaning and, if necessary, repairing the statue, restoring the pedestal, and renovating the 226 steps of the 40-metre-high mound.
Interested companies can submit bids until 29 April, with work expected to commence in September. The project will be "carried out with financial support from the National Lottery players," according to the announcement.
The Lion’s Mound was erected in 1826 at the behest of William I, King of the Netherlands. It stands at the presumed location where his eldest son, the Prince of Orange, was wounded on 18 June 1815, as noted on the monument’s website.
