Five railway unions have united for a 24-hour railway strike on Tuesday 8 April and will continue to coordinate their actions, which will have a greater impact on train traffic.

ACOD Spoor, ACV Transcom, VSOA Spoor, OVS and ASTB are the unions that have confirmed the collaboration. They had already announced closer cooperation on Wednesday.

Now, a "well-considered, coordinated and structured action plan" has been confirmed. In concrete terms, VSOA Spoor, OVS and ASTB are abandoning their own action plans and joining the agenda of the largest unions ACOD Spoor and ACV Transcom. They will hold a 24-hour strike every Tuesday this month from 8 April (8, 15, 22 and 29 April).

Action continues in May

Pierre Lejeune of ACOD Spoor says the actions in May will be "reinforced and gradually expanded".

"The modalities of this will be determined in the coming days," he said.

A sixth small union, Metisp-Protect, has not joined the new front. It is currently holding a strike week.

The Metisp-Protect strike week will be followed by a strike day on Monday 31 March, following a general strike across the country. ACOD Spoor, ACV Transcom and VSOA Spoor have filed a notice for this.

The unions are protesting against the Federal Government's plans to increase the retirement age and other reforms to labour law.
