The population in Eastern Europe is declining at a dramatic rate, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Thursday.

In Ukraine, the birth rate has dropped below one child per woman due to the war.

Significant population declines have been observed in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

In some countries, the population has decreased by more than 30% compared to 1990.

Declining birth rates are also noticeable in Western Europe, but they are exacerbated in Eastern Europe by high emigration rates. This leads to an aging population and negatively impacts economic productivity.

In Ukraine, the birth rate has fallen to the lowest in Europe and among the lowest in the world.

Since 2014, Ukraine’s population has decreased by 10 million.
