The second edition of Belgian Museum Week, scheduled from 11 to 18 May, is expected to make more noise than the first.

Organisers presented the event's highlights at Train World in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek on Wednesday, including a contest allowing the public to vote for the "masterpiece of the year."

Since 2018, museumPASSmusées has offered an annual pass granting access to various museums in Belgium, with Train World recently rejoining, bringing the total to 261 institutions.

This vast array of museums forms the basis for the 2024 Museum Week, where organisers have invited all museums to enter one of their standout pieces into the competition.

From now until 18 May, Belgians can vote for their favourite work, ranging from classic paintings to more unusual items like trees or tropical fish.

Winners of the contest will be revealed during a closing event on 18 May as part of International Museum Day.

Over 100 museums have already submitted a candidate piece, and about 80 will host special events during Museum Week, with numbers expected to rise in the coming weeks, organisers say.
