Three deaths in German village: Suspect on the run

German police have cordoned off the village of Weitefeld, located over 50 kilometres from Bonn in Western Germany, after discovering three bodies on Sunday morning.

The suspect remains at large. All vehicles entering or leaving the village are being checked, according to a reporter from the German news agency dpa. Officers equipped with helmets and machine guns are on the scene, and a helicopter is hovering overhead. Special units are also involved in the operation.

The three dead may have been victims of a crime within the family context. Among the fatalities are two men and one woman, a police spokesman reported.

Asked if any of the male victims were minors, he replied only that “we cannot rule it out.” In addition to the early hour, the crime scene - a single-family home - also speaks to a family motive, the spokesman said.

Police were called Sunday morning at around 3:45. When officers arrived, a person, believed to be a man, had fled on foot. According to unconfirmed indications, firearms or stabbing weapons were allegedly used. A police spokeswoman referred to “a screaming person” during the emergency call.

Police were initially still searching for the suspected perpetrator, including with a helicopter over a forest.
