The Flemish Government plans to create 10,000 additional childcare places, including 850 in Brussels, announced Cieltje Van Achter (N-VA), Flemish Minister for Brussels, on Sunday.

Of the 10,000 new childcare places, 6,000 will be subsidised based on parents’ income levels. The remaining 4,000 places will receive basic subsidies.

In Brussels, there will be 450 additional subsidised places. “We are investing strategically in young families and solid Dutch-speaking childcare services,” said Cieltje Van Achter. Additionally, 400 new places will receive basic subsidies. “In these centres, organisers determine the fees for parents themselves,” Van Achter explained.

Every extra place is valuable. Additional initiatives will be launched, including local service desks, childcare needs assessments, and innovative projects. This could add up to 150 more places, depending on the number of applicants.

Furthermore, the Flemish government plans to implement support policies. Brussels will receive €6 million for infrastructure improvements, including new and renovated childcare facilities.
