The Castle of Huizingen in Flemish Brabant is set to undergo restoration, announced the regional Flemish Minister of Heritage Ben Weyts (N-VA).

The Castle of Huizingen dates back to the 15th century. It was expanded and given its well-known neo-Renaissance style in the 19th century.

The owner at that time also had a park built around it, which is now one of the four provincial domains of Flemish Brabant.

However, a recent inspection by Monument Monitoring Body revealed several issues.

Various natural stone elements, such as the balcony parapet, were found to be loose. In some places, water is also seeping in.

To address these problems, the castle will be restored in the near future.

The roof will be repaired, with damaged natural slates replaced, gutters and copper ridge pieces fixed, and the roof structure reinforced.

The natural stone elements in need of renewal will also be repaired and anchored.

The total cost of the project is estimated at €821,500. The Flemish Government will contribute about 15%, or €125,000. The remaining costs will be covered by the Heritage Foundation of the province of Flemish Brabant.
