A worker who fell into a waste pit at an incinerator on 4 April has succumbed to his injuries, Bruxelles-Propreté confirmed on Friday.
The incident occurred on Friday 4 April at around 20:15.
The worker, employed by a subcontractor, fell into the waste pit at the energy recovery unit on the Brussels-Energy industrial site, a subsidiary of the Brussels-Cleanliness group.
Emergency services responded quickly, but the worker’s condition remained critical. Unfortunately, he later died from his injuries.
"Brussels-Energy has identified a series of shortcomings and has immediately suspended its contractual relations with the concerned subcontractor," said Adel Lassouli, spokesperson for the Brussels-Cleanliness group.
"Brussels-Energy is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and is available to assist with the ongoing investigation," Lassouli added.
A psychological support unit has been established for all plant staff, with particular attention to those directly affected by the incident.
Located along the canal in Brussels, Brussels-Energy is the energy recovery plant of Bruxelles-Propreté producing energy from non-recyclable household or similar waste.
Upstream of this unit, a pre-treatment site for waste and nitrous oxide crisis management has been set up, enhancing the environmental capabilities of the entire system.
