Energy company Engie has started constructing a solar park at its Rodenhuize site in the Port of Ghent. The installation will produce approximately enough energy to power more than 1,600 households.

The solar park will feature 8,030 panels spread across an area of about 45,000 square metres. It is set to produce 5.7 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually starting from summer 2025.

This project aligns with North Sea Port and the City of Ghent's climate ambitions, which focus on renewable energy and reducing CO₂ emissions in the port area.

The chosen location in Rodenhuize is a former industrial zone that is unsuitable for building or traditional economic activities due to soil contamination and spatial constraints. The site is now being repurposed to support the energy transition.

Engie has previously invested in three wind turbines and an ultra-fast charging station at the same site.

To enhance local biodiversity, Engie will install a bee hotel, a woodpile, and flowering vegetation under and between the panels.
