A 10-year-old girl who fell into the Bruges Ringvaart canal on Friday with her grandfather and another grandchild has died, according to the West Flanders public prosecutor.
Emergency services were called at approximately 13:40 after a serious accident at the Warande Bridge. A vehicle had ended up in the canal, carrying a grandfather and his two grandchildren. One child managed to free themselves, but the grandfather and the other grandchild were rescued from the water in critical condition and taken to hospital.
The grandfather passed away on Friday evening, and on Saturday, the public prosecutor confirmed the death of the 10-year-old girl.
The bridge was open at the time of the accident, with the barrier down, but the driver reportedly drove through. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
