The annual fasting campaign by Broederlijk Delen has raised €2 million in recent weeks, matching last year’s total.
This year’s campaign highlighted the issue of pesticides banned in Europe still being exported to non-EU countries.
“Hormone-disrupting and carcinogenic pesticides are no longer allowed in Europe but can still be produced and exported freely outside the EU. It seems the health of some is valued more than others,” explained Lieve Herijgers, Director of Broederlijk Delen.
Guests from Uganda and Burkina Faso met with various European politicians to discuss the impact of these hazardous pesticides in their countries. They also participated in a protest near the European Commission. “We urge the European Union to immediately find a way to stop the export of dangerous pesticides to Africa and other continents,” said Eric Oteba from the Ugandan partner organisation KRC.
The campaign began on 5 March and concludes today. Volunteers were active in all provinces. “Based on current results, we expect to raise €2 million. With these resources and the commitment of many volunteers, we can collaborate with our partner organisations in twelve countries,” stated Herijgers.
