A Belgian court has ordered the Belgian state to comply with a prison commission’s decision regarding an inmate transfer at Haren prison, threatening fines of €5,000 for each day of delay.
On Friday, the commission instructed the prison to move an inmate from a high-security regime to a standard one, but the prison had failed to act.
The inmate’s lawyers, Romain Delcoigne and Sven Mary, obtained a swift ruling from the Brussels civil court on Sunday by visiting a judge’s residence due to the urgency of the matter.
They requested the court to enforce the Friday decision made by the appeals commission, which addresses detainee complaints.
The ruling was intended to be enforced immediately. After a quick review, the judge ordered the Belgian state and Haren prison’s management to promptly implement the commission’s decision.
Failure to comply would result in fines of €5,000 for each day of non-compliance.
