47 cyclists were assisted by emergency services on Sunday late morning after a crash involving a part of the peloton during the UCI Gran Fondo qualifying event held at the Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure in Froidchapelle (Hainaut), as confirmed by Alain Vandromme, the mayor of the commune, in the early afternoon and reported by several media outlets.
Emergency services, including several ambulances and various police teams, responded to the incident at the Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure. According to Mayor Alain Vandromme, one of the injured cyclists was initially in a serious condition. However, event organisers later announced that the cyclist was no longer in danger, which Vandromme described as “good news.”
Following consultations, local authorities, organisers, and emergency services decided to cancel the event, held for the first time in Froidchapelle. Organisers stated that with all available resources (five ambulances, three emergency doctors, and medical teams) fully engaged to handle the accident, it was impossible to ensure the safety of all participants.
Participants who were not involved in the crash were allowed to continue the course independently, adhering to road traffic regulations.
