A former member of Reuzegom, convicted for the death of Sanda Dia, will not be allowed to supervise master’s theses as a doctoral candidate this academic year at Ghent University.
This decision followed an internal debate within the council of Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Chancellor Rik Van de Walle had previously lifted a ban on the doctoral candidate’s teaching role.
According to Van de Walle, the initial permission for J.J. to supervise in November 2024 was granted by the initiative of the supervisor and on the advice of the legal service.
"It is not the rector’s role to decide who supervises a thesis. That is the faculty’s responsibility," stated Van de Walle.
The faculty maintains its autonomy in deciding which doctoral candidates are involved in thesis supervision.
Despite lifting the restriction, it has now clearly decided not to allow J.J. this supervisory role for the time being.
