The University of Antwerp launched a local climate study using a drone in Brasschaat, Antwerp province, on Saturday.

The drone will autonomously survey the De Inslag forest daily, simultaneously conducting measurements with its seven onboard instruments—a global first.

Researchers aim to gain insights into tree health, the effects of climate change, and plant-environment interactions. The drone will fly 30 minutes a day, several metres above the forest canopy. It will measure treetop temperatures, accurately record leaf colour, and assess the light emitted by trees.

De Inslag has been utilised for research by the University of Antwerp and the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (INBO) since 1996. The university focuses on climate studies, while INBO addresses air pollution. A 40-metre monitoring tower, equipped with over 100 sensors, measures CO2 absorption and emission. The drone’s introduction will significantly enhance research capabilities, potentially even assessing wildfire risks.

Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) stated that this research could lead to breakthroughs in ecological processes and benefit the Flemish economy and society. The Flemish government supports the project through the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO).
