The Mayer van den Bergh Museum in the heart of Antwerp will close its doors this Sunday, 27 April, for several years due to extensive restoration work.

Art enthusiasts have just a few more hours to admire the masterpieces collected by Fritz Mayer van den Bergh. In recent weeks, visitors have enjoyed a special farewell programme featuring lectures, workshops, and guided tours.

On Saturday, the adjacent Hof van Arenberg will transform into a “Fin de Siècle” bar, hosting a ball. Guests can enjoy a dance, have their hair styled at a Belle Époque salon, sip a cocktail, attend an intimate concert, or browse the exhibition rooms one last time.

The renovations will involve expanding and refurbishing the museum. The adjacent corner house, once the family home of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, and a new building will become part of the museum. This transformation will enhance visitor comfort and ensure better preservation conditions for the artworks, including Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s renowned painting, “Mad Meg.”

The museum is scheduled to reopen in 2029. In the meantime, selected works will be displayed at the nearby Maagdenhuis, while the rest of the collection will be stored safely during the renovation period.
