This Saturday, former Member of Parliament Valerie Van Peel is set to be elected as the new leader of the Flemish nationalist N-VA party.

The 45-year-old Van Peel is the sole candidate to succeed Bart De Wever, who is stepping down after more than 20 years as party leader. De Wever has become Prime Minister and will pass the torch.

Now, Valerie Van Peel is taking charge of the Flemish nationalist party. With no challengers, the only question is how overwhelming her election victory will be.

Van Peel previously served as the party spokesperson and spent ten years in Parliament. She had announced her departure from politics before the last parliamentary elections, disheartened by the failure of her proposal for asbestos victims.

“I felt something was gnawing at me,” she said when announcing her candidacy for leadership. “In a world where extremes are alarmingly advancing, cooperation is needed more than ever. I felt I couldn’t stand aside,” she continued. “I felt the strength and fighting spirit again, the desire to make a difference in our society.”

Shortly after announcing her candidacy, Van Peel received backing from the party leadership. The absence of challengers indicates her widespread support within the party.

In interviews, Van Peel has stated she does not plan major changes but intends to introduce her own priorities.
