Belgium's Christian, socialist, and liberal unions called on Monday for an extension of the social energy tariff to include more low-income groups, which could potentially assist one in five Belgians.

A resolution adopted by the Chamber on 24 April seeks to broaden the scheme to include low-income workers without increasing the allocated budget. However, the unions are concerned that implementing this reform may worsen the situation for many current beneficiaries.

The unions argue that introducing a flat-rate subsidy might create a gap between the compensation and actual needs.

Additionally, recipients would be required to enter a commercial contract with an electricity provider. However, studies by the Commission for Electricity and Gas Regulation (CREG) indicate that consumers do not always opt for the most advantageous contracts.

The union believe the reform “threatens to undermine the benefits of a functioning system.” They refer to the CREG’s opinion, highlighting that the current social tariff ensures a single rate for all, automatic allocation, and effective protection against energy poverty.

About 500,000 Belgians benefit from the social electricity tariff, and 300,000 receive a preferential rate for natural gas.
