Traffic on Flemish motorways reached approximately 230 kilometres on Tuesday morning during rush hour.
The Traffic Centre attributes the high numbers to an unusually high number of incidents. "These involve broken-down vehicles and collisions," said spokesperson Peter Bruyninckx.
According to Bruyninckx, Tuesday's nationwide general strike had little impact on the traffic situation. He noted that increased activity would have been observed before 06:00 if it had been significant, which was not the case.
Bruyninckx suggested that the low-lying sun likely played a role in the traffic disruptions and incidents.
