The trial of seven individuals closely associated with far-right soldier Jürgen Conings, who died in 2021, has yet to commence at the Brussels Correctional Court and is now scheduled for 6 October.
The group was once suspected of planning an attack; however, no evidence was found to support this claim. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office continues to prosecute them for violations of weapons legislation.
Jürgen Conings became news in May 2021 when he stole heavy weapons from the Leopoldsburg barracks and went missing.
Known for his far-right ideology and threats against virologist Marc Van Ranst, a judicial investigation was promptly launched, leading to a manhunt. The Hoge Kempen National Park was searched extensively, but Conings remained elusive until some cyclists discovered his body on 20 June.
An analysis of his smartphone revealed that he had been communicating on internet forums with like-minded individuals, including certain notable figures from the far-right scene, and had incited violent and armed actions.
Several individuals expressed their willingness to participate in such actions.
Investigators searched the home of one suspect, F.D., and found various weapons, which he claimed to have purchased from another suspect, E.M.
The investigation could not substantiate the preparation of an attack, but seven suspects, including F.D. and E.M., are now being prosecuted for violations of weapons legislation. An eighth individual was initially suspected but later cleared of charges.
