The number of infiltration operations targeting criminal groups in Belgium doubled between 2023 and 2024, according to the annual report of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, released on Monday.
Last year, investigators conducted 65 infiltration operations, up from 35 in 2023, according the Office, which oversees the use of special investigative methods.
Of the 65 operations, 14 were initiated as part of federal judicial cases, the report shows.
Established 20 years ago, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had a busy 2024, tackling issues such as drug trafficking, corruption, threats to the rule of law, Russian interference amid the geopolitical tension from the Ukraine war, and the increasing challenge of cybercrime.
