Finding affordable housing in Brussels has become increasingly challenging, as demand outstrips supply, according to a report in L’Echo on Friday.

Potential tenants are applying in their droves to the Housing Fund in Brussels, where there are reportedly 3.5 candidates for every available dwelling.

The Housing Fund, which assists low-income families in renting or buying homes, has seen its waiting list of prospective tenants expand significantly.

By the end of 2024, 5,609 households were registered, up from 4,852 in 2023, marking a 16% increase. Over the past five years, the number of applicants has surged by 61.6%.

The scarcity of rental properties has also driven rents up by 15% over the past two years.

Currently, the institution manages more than 1,600 homes, boasting an occupancy rate of 98%.
