Now that the festival season has kicked off this weekend with Couleur Café and Paradise City, a survey by iVox and Bancontact Payconiq Company found that Belgian festival-goers will spend an average of €426 this summer.

The festival season started last weekend, and Belgians are looking forward to the rest of the summer: one in three said they will attend a music event this summer. On average, festival-goers set aside three days for this.

A festival budget varies greatly from person to person, the survey found. French speakers tend to spend more (€527) than Dutch speakers (€355), and there is also a striking difference between men and women: men spend on average twice as much (€578) as women (€240).

The largest expenditures come from 35- to 54-year-olds (€603), followed by those under 34 (€367) and those over 55 (€218).

Cashless payments increasingly popular

When it comes to payments, Belgian festival-goers are increasingly opting for cashless solutions. Bank cards are the most popular (37%), followed by cash (22%) and rechargeable chip bracelets (10%).

A quarter of Belgians find cashless systems more practical (25%) and faster (24%). However, one in five (20%) say that this makes it more difficult to keep track of their spending.

Digital payment solutions are also becoming increasingly popular for reimbursing expenses among friends. More than one in five Belgians (22%) say they have used an app for this type of transaction. Among young people under the age of 34, Payconiq by Bancontact is the most popular option (29%), followed by transfers via their banking app (27%).
