Between 24 and 30 December, an average of 10,126 new infections was confirmed per day in Belgium – a 52% increase in the weekly average compared to the previous week (17-23 December). On Thursday 30 December, just under 16,000 confirmed infections were registered.
The number of hospital admissions also rose slightly, with an average of 149 new Covid-19 patients per day between 27 December and 2 January. The previous average was 143 admissions per day.

On Sunday 2 January, the Belgian hospitals reported an occupation rate of 1,765 Covid-19 patients - up from 1,704 on Saturday but fewer than 2,000 on Christmas Eve.
In intensive care, the figures continue to fall: 508 Covid-19 patients are currently admitted to the ICU, which is 19 fewer than on Saturday.
On Sunday and Monday, Sciensano does not publish a full update of the figures because hospitals do not have to report figures at weekends and on public holidays.
A new, complete update of the coronavirus figures in Belgium will only be published on Tuesday.
