Sciensano reports further drop in Coronavirus patients in intensive care

The number of Coronavirus patients in intensive care in Belgian hospitals was 177 on Friday, 18% lower than the previous week, according to the latest figures from the Sciensano public health institute, updated on Saturday morning.

The total number of persons hospitalised for Covid-19 up to Friday was 1,933, a 6% drop, Belga News Agency reports.

However, new hospital admissions for Covid-19 from 5 to 11 March averaged 144.6 per day, a 9% increase on the previous one-week period.

The number of new infections registered per day between 2 and 8 March was 7,250, a 24% increase, while daily testing decreased by 4%, ending the week on 33,961, with a positivity rate of 23%.

Daily deaths from the virus averaged 18.3, a 14% drop. This brought the cumulative death toll since the start of the pandemic in Belgium two years ago to 30,408.

The reproduction rate of the virus now stands at 1.02. A rate of more than 1 means the virus is progressing.
