Tragedy struck on 20 April as a 19-year-old first-year law student at the University of Namur stumbled and fell around 20 metres from the Walloon capital's iconic Citadel of Namur.
The girl, later identified as Manon by Belgian publication SudInfo, was with friends visiting the landmark when she fell accidentally near the base of the fortification. The initial stages of the investigation have revealed no foul play and several eye-witness testimonies have been recorded.
The Citadel is an ancient fortress in the Walloon capital. Its highest point sits around 190 metres tall and the walk to the top of the fortification is marked with steep walls and fortifications.
The University of Namur learned of the death of the student on 21 April. Classes at the Faculty of Law have been suspended.

“The Dean of the Faculty wanted to meet the students and a moment of reflection was organised in the Louise-Marie park,” said Rector Annick Castiaux. “We are also going to set up psychological support. The whole institution is upset.”
The university also plans to open a book of condolence to allow students to leave messages in memory of the young girl.
