Jacques Goemaere, the local Councillor for Culture and Education in Oostrozebeke, West Flanders, died on Friday evening from his injuries after having been hit while riding his bicycle, the Kortrijk Prosecutor’s Office announced on Saturday.
The traffic accident he was involved in occurred back on Thursday, June 16 around 16:30 along the Steenovenstraat in Meulebeke.
The victim had been hit by a car while trying to cross the street, and was taken to the hospital in a serious condition.
The prosecution called it an “unfortunate accident”, with the speed of the motorist not being to blame according to a witness.
Jacques Goemaere finally died after spending several weeks in a coma.
He was in charge of Culture, Education, Housing, Markets, Cemeteries, Social Action and Social Housing since 2018. His powers have been redistributed among the other aldermen of Oostrozebeke.
