Most people would like to be able to get rid of a wasp nest when it is near a home, but this cannot be considered an urgent intervention, the Belgian Civil Security service said on Thursday.
You should therefore not call 112, which should always be reserved for real emergencies, Civil Security recommended.
A sting in the mouth or throat, or an allergic reaction, would require, for example, a call to 112, it explained. On the other hand, professional exterminators or local firefighters can take care of wasp nests, but they are to be contacted via the digital counter.
“Warning!” the service added. “Even if you call the firefighters, such an intervention will generally pay off.”
This spring, the dry, sunny weather created the perfect conditions for the wasp queens to start nesting early, so the nests are relatively numerous this summer, according to Civil Security.
