A 50-year-old whose body was found in Ghent on Sunday was thrown alive into the water and died by drowning, the Office of the Public Prosecutor (OPP) of East Flanders announced on Monday, based on the autopsy report.
The man, born in 1969, was found in the water at Ferdinand Lousbergskaai on Sunday morning.
The OPP has retained the hypothesis of a suspicious death. An investigating judge went to the scene, accompanied by a forensic doctor and an expert in forensic analysis. Investigators then reviewed video surveillance footage.
"The man was alive when he was thrown into the water; he died by drowning," the autopsy report indicated. “For the moment, it is not possible to determine in more detail the circumstances of his death,” the spokesperson for the OPP said.
