In Koekelare, 15 children were taken to hospital last night after becoming unwell, presumably due to heatstroke. It concerns a group of girls of 10 to 12 years old from Hoogstraten who were camping with the Flemish scout organisation Chiro.
At about 18:35 last night, the emergency services were called to a campsite in the Ichtegemstraat in Koekelare. A number of the children at the youth camp had become unwell due to the heat.
After an initial check-up by an emergency response team, 15 children were taken to three nearby hospitals. All children showed signs of heat stroke, but none of them are in a life-threatening condition.
