Heptathlon: Nafi Thiam wins second European title in a row

Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam on Thursday won the heptathlon for the second time in a row at the European Athletics Championships, held in Munich, Germany. Noor Vidts finished in fourth place.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist, who hails from Namur, was in the lead after the first six events on Thursday morning. She secured her title on Thursday evening by taking 10th place in the 800 metres with a time of 2:17.95.

Thiam finished with 6,628 points, ahead of Poland’s Adrianna Sulek (6,532) and Annik Kalin, who beat the Swiss national record with 6,515 points.

Fourth before the double lap, Noor Vidts failed to make the podium despite placing second in the 800 metres, with a time of 2:09.63. She finished in fourth place overall with 6,467 points.

World champion for the second time in her career last month in Eugene, USA, “Nafi” Thiam now has her second European title in a row after winning gold in Berlin in 2018. She was crowned Olympic champion in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021.
