The future of the Coronalert app, introduced by the Federal Government in 2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 throughout the country, will be assessed next week, with the app potentially being paused or deleted.
According to the Flemish newspaper Het Belang van Limburg, the inter-federal committee Testing & Tracing will meet next week to discuss if the Coronalert app should be placed on hold or perhaps even removed from devices.
In total, the Coronalert has been downloaded on 4.2 million devices and "currently, the app has roughly 890,000 active users," KU Leuven Professor Bart Preneel told the newspaper, "which is about half of the high in the beginning of this year."

The inter-federal committee, however, has given it three options: "either we keep the app alive, put it to sleep, or abandon it entirely," Preneel added.
Given that the app was deemed to have made 'no contribution' in fighting the virus, few will be surprised if the latter two options are chosen.
